 For the first time in its history, Apple now has two flagship smartphones on the market. While Apple did offer the iPhone 5c last year, that device was intended more as a midrange device.

Here are a number of differences between the two devices and why you might need one over the other.

Size and Display

The most obvious difference between the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus is the display. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display, with the iPhone 6 Plus boasting a 5.5-inch display.

It is important to remember that even the smaller iPhone 6 is larger than last year's iPhone 5S, so for those who like the size of the iPhone 5S, the standard iPhone 6 will probably be the best choice.

The iPhone 6 has a resolution of 1334x740, while the iPhone 6 Plus' resolution sits at 1920x1080. This is quite a difference, and puts the iPhone 6 Plus with other flagship devices on the market, while the iPhone 6 has a rather disappointing display.

Camera

Both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have an improved camera, now including 8-megapixel iSight sensors. Apple also says that both devices now have "Focus Pixels," allowing the cameras to focus much faster on the subject.

The iPhone 6 Plus, however, goes a step further and offers optical image stabilization, essentially allowing the camera to physically move within the phone to compensate for being shaken a little while a photo is being taken. Human movement is inevitable when taking a photo, so this feature is a very nice addition. For those who are into photography and want more than the occasional photo with friends at a party, the iPhone 6 Plus may be the better option.

Battery Life

In addition to the features mentioned, the iPhone 6 Plus will also get a better battery life. According to the specs that Apple has posted on its website, the iPhone 6 Plus will have a standby time of up to 16 days on a single charge, while the iPhone 6 will "only" last 10 days. The iPhone 6 Plus can also play audio for up to 80 hours, with the iPhone 6 coming in at 60.

While both devices have a rather good battery life, it is still a feature that will put the iPhone 6 Plus ahead of the iPhone 6 for many users.

Cost

Just because the iPhone 6 Plus has the features to make many want to buy it over its little brother, that does not mean that everyone can afford it.

The iPhone 6, with 16 GB of storage, will start at $199 with a two-year contract. In comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus will come in at $299 with a two-year contract.

Other Features

Both devices will get a number of other upgrades. They will both take advantage of Apple's new A8 processor and will features Near-Field Communication technology, allowing users to try Apple's new Apple Pay mobile payment system. In addition, they will both include Apple's new iOS 8, which brings a number of software upgrades.

Conclusions

As far as specifications go, the iPhone 6 Plus is a clear winner. However that does not necessarily justify spending the extra money, especially for those that do not need the better features. Not only that, but the size alone is enough to repel many from the iPhone 6 Plus.

Whichever device is chosen, Apple is on to a winner with both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

Apple iPhone 6 with 5.5-inch display, named iPhone Air, may not arrive until 2015

Apple may not sell it's larger iPhone 6 with 5.5-inch display, also called iPhone Air, until 2015.
Apple may, for the first time, unveil two iPhones when it announces the iPhone 6 around September. This is what the rumour mill has been saying, from many different sources, for months.
Now a report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple won't be putting its larger iPhone Air on sale until 2015.
The iPhone 6 model that will first arrive, at 4.7-inches, has apparently been suffering production issues associated with the larger screen size. These issues will become even more complicated for the larger 5.5-inch model, according to Kuo.
Kuo says: "Production bottlenecks on 4.7-inch iPhone 6 centre on the yield rate of in-cell touch panel and metal casing. As in-cell touch panel becomes larger in size, the edge of the panel may become insensitive to touch. Meanwhile, under new manufacturing process for the iPhone 6 metal casing, colour unevenness is an issue."
According to Kuo Apple will also be dropping its prices for the iPhone 5S and 5C.
Apple is expected to release the iPhone 6 in September with a sapphire glass screen, new A9 processor, improved camera and thinner profile.

iOS 8 is still a few months away, but we’ve got plenty of information about Apple’s next-generation mobile operating system, in the past couple of weeks. Here’s a roundup of everything we know about iOS 8 so far.

As one would expect, iOS 8 will feature the same design as iOS 7, and would instead focus on adding new apps and features.

Healthbook

One of the most popular Apple rumor in the past few months has been that Apple is working on a health and fitness, wearable device. Healthbook is a new iOS 8 app that will monitor your most important health statistics like steps taken, calories burned, weight lost and track vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate and other blood-related parameters like glucose levels. All this data would likely be obtained by the sensors on the iWatch.

The app will feature an interface similar to the Passbook app. Here’s a mockup:

A leaked screenshot of iOS 8 gave a look at the Healthbook app icon, which reveals that it’ll track your blood pressure, heart rate and calories burned.

Improved Maps with Transit directions, augmented Reality

With iOS 6, Apple took a bold step to build its own mapping service, replacing Google Maps. The launch wasn’t great, as the data coverage was limited, and a number of features like transit, street view weren’t available. iOS 8 will improve the Maps app with improved points-of-interest data, public transit directions in select cities, augmented reality and indoor mapping.

Preview, TextEdit apps to make iCloud more useful

TextEdit and Preview, two very frequently used applications on the Mac, have supported iCloud syncing since quite some time. According to rumors, Apple will finally build iOS versions of these two apps to make the synced documents through these two apps accessible on iPhone and iPad. Standalone iTunes Radio app

iTunes Radio is Apple’s new free, ad-supported music streaming service, that lives inside of the Music app on iOS 7 devices. Apple plans to make iTunes Radio a standalone app in iOS 8 for better visibility, and increased engagement.

No Game Center app

iOS 8 (and OS X) will not include the Game Center app, and the functionality would instead just live within the games that support Game Center.

Improved Notification Center

The iOS 7 Notification Center includes three tabs, Today, All and Missed. With iOS 8, Apple is reportedly thinking of including just two tabs, Today and Notifications.

The iOS 8 Notification Center would also include more information from your online accounts powered by Apple’s acquisition of Cue.

Inter-App Communication

Apple is considering adding inter-app communication abilities in iOS 8, a feature that has long been requested by the iOS developer community to better facilitate sharing of information between apps. With inter-app communications, you could edit a photo in one app, and post it to another, without the need to hop between the two apps.

A new Tips app?

Leaked screenshots of iOS 8 reveal that Apple is working on a new Tips app, with a light bulb icon. The Tips app could possibly give users tips to better use their iPhone and iPad, but it’s exact purpose isn’t known yet.

CarPlay over WiFi

CarPlay is Apple’s way of bringing the iPhone experience to your car dashboard. It was introduced with iOS 7.1 with an impressive lineup of partner car manufacturers, but currently it works only with a Lightning cable. With iOS 8, Apple plans to make CarPlay wireless, by making it work over WiFi as well.

How to Hide Stock Apps in iOS 7.1

There was a bug in iOS 7 that allowed users to hide stocks from the Home screen without jailbreaking, which Apple had fixed in a subsequent update. But a YouTube user has again found a bug in iOS 7.1 that allows users to hide stock apps.

Here’s how to hide the stock apps in iOS 7.1:

• You should ensure that the dock has the maximum number of apps, i.e. 6 apps on the iPad, and 4 apps on the iPhone.

• Put the apps you want to hide in a folder.

• Move this folder on a Home screen that is full of apps.

• Now drag an app on top of another app to create a folder, then quickly drag the folder that you had created earlier, into this new folder.

• Remove the two apps you had added to create the new folder.

• Then drag the sub folder with the apps you wanted to add from the new folder. And just like that the folder will disappear from the Home screen, which also means that the apps in the folder will be hidden.

The downside of this method is that the apps will return on the Home screen when you reboot the device.

It amazes me how people find these bugs. So kudos to iDeviceHelpus for finding it. I’s quite likely that Apple will fix the bug in next iOS software update.

How to Reduce Transparency and Blur for better contrast and readability in iOS 7.1

iOS 7 brought some huge changes to Apple’s mobile operating system, with concepts like transparency, depth, motion etc., that were extensively used in the interface. If you don’t like the transparency and blur, here’s how you can reduce it in iOS 7.1.

The transparency and blur are useful to convey depth, but can consume battery and also be distracting, so here’s how to reduce the transparency in Notification Center, the Dock, Keyboard and a number of other places:

• Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad running iOS 7.1 or higher, and navigate to General > Accessibility

• Scroll down and tap on the “Increase Contrast” button

• Enable the “Reduce Transparency” switch

You should now see the transparency reduced, and the background of various elements like Control Center, Dock, Keyboard etc. turn opaque.

How to fix Wallpaper Zooming issues on iOS 7.1 with Perspective Zoom

A number of people have complained that their pixel-perfect wallpapers for iOS 6 appeared zoomed in on iOS 7. There were some workarounds to this issue, but iOS 7.1 has an easy way to disable this behavior.

Apple’s newfound focus on motion and parallax means that iOS magnifies your wallpaper in order to give it space to move around when you tilt your device. Perspective Zoom is a new setting in iOS 7.1 that appears when setting a new wallpaper. With Perspective Zoom disabled, iOS no longer magnifies your wallpaper,

How to fix Wallpaper Zooming issues:

• Go to Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness, and set a new wallpaper (or tap on the existing one) like you normally do.

• When the Preview screen appears, along with the standard Cancel and Set buttons, you’ll also see a new Perspective Zoom button.

• To disable wallpaper zooming, tap on the Perspective Zoom button to toggle its state. Once the button says “Perspective Zoom: Off” your wallpaper won’t zoom. (Note that you’ll have to first disable Perspective Zoom, and then Set the wallpaper.)

When Perspective Zoom is off, iOS will no longer move your wallpaper as you move your device. It will however slightly zoom into the wallpaper when you wake up your device. Also note that this toggle is independent of the Reduce Motion setting in the Accessibility menu, so you can selectively disable wallpaper parallax even with Reduce Motion turned off.
