Tips and tricks for Google Play
Unless you’re running a forked version of Android, you probably use the Google Play Store daily, regardless of whether you know it or not. Did you know that there are some tips and tricks you can use with the Play Store to help make your user experience a little more awesome? You can delete your search history, add a password to your account, and manage the automatic updates and more. Here are a few of our favorite tricks for the official Android marketplace.
Install an application not available in your country
Depending on your location, you may have encountered this issue before. Either the app in question isn’t officially available in your country, region, or whatnot or you’re really jonesing to get it.
Thankfully, there’s an easy unofficial work around for this: you can both set up a VPN and spoof your country to one that the app is available in. For that, you can easily follow our quick guide on how to get that going and we provide a few different options.
As well, you can just download the APK directly from the Google Play Store and install it regardless. This is a simple way to go about doing it, but you'll need to ensure that Unknown Sources is checked off so that you can install APK files. As always, make sure you know what you're installing when going straight for the APK file as if you install from an unknown source (ie: not the Play Store) it could possibly be corrupted/loaded with malware.
Manage devices from the Play Store
This is particularly useful if you ever decide to sell your smartphone or tablet and don’t want your Google Play account going with it. As well, this can be used to manage multiple devices across a single account in case you enjoy grabbing the latest smartphone or tablet as soon as they’re released.
You can use our guide to manage multiple devices across a single Google account or you could also remove old devices from your account so that they don’t show up anymore.
Android Device Manager
This option is particularly useful for locating a lost or stolen Android device should it ever come to that. Google launched the service relatively quietly awhile ago, but unfortunately, it’s not enabled by default.
In order to get Android Device Manager up and going for your Android device, check out our guide on the subject. As well, you can set it up so that you can remotely wipe and reset your device should it ever come to it.
Parental locks and restrictions
Google has supposedly banned adult related apps from the Google Play Store, but every now and then, there’s some questionable content out there. As well, with the abundance of in app purchases now, your little one playing Candy Crush could easily turn into a large bill for yourself if you’re not careful.
As with everything else, we’ve got a guide for that! Take a look at the top parental controls app for your Android device and you can easily pick and choose how you want to control your little ones access to the Google Play Store and your Android device in general.
Try out a paid app / get a refund for a paid app
Ever want to just try out a paid Android app first before you shell out the money for it? Or just not satisfied with a paid app once you’ve already splurged on it? Well, with a few tricks you can try out or refund a paid app within a 48-hour time period.
There are two methods for doing this: a 15 minute grace period in which you can easily get a refund for the money you spent or one that allows a little bit more wiggle room, 48 hours, but might take a bit of time for you to see a refund to your account. Check out our guide on how you can accomplish this yourself!
